ODOE announces $1.5 million for renewable energy projects across state

Grants will help support electricity production using renewable resources


The Oregon Department of Energy today announced prospective recipients of $1.5 million in funding through its Renewable Energy Development grant program. The program is open to developers of renewable energy systems that use biomass, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, landfill gas, biogas, or wave, tidal, or ocean energy to produce electricity. The 17 projects in the final approval stage are located in nine counties across the state.

ODOE opened up this round of Renewable Energy Development grants, also known as RED grants, to developers in December 2014. More than 25 projects were submitted by the January 23, 2015, deadline; 23 projects were qualified to move on to the competitive review phase, and 17 were selected to move forward for a final technical review. To finalize eligibility for grant funding, projects developers enter into a performance agreement with ODOE that establishes how the project will deliver on the predicted renewable energy generation goals.

“ODOE is charged with spurring investment in renewable energy production through our Energy Incentives Program,” said Michael Kaplan, agency director. “Groups across Oregon have stepped up, with diverse projects that will generate renewable electricity for everything from family farms to affordable housing to Habitat for Humanity.”

Grants for selected projects range from just under $10,000, allocated for a $28,220 solar project at the Santiam Valley Ranch in Turner, to several $250,000 grants for projects in Sheridan, Klamath Falls, and near St. Paul. Nearly all of the finalists are developing solar photovoltaic systems. Three Sisters Irrigation District is slated to receive $110,000 for a hydroelectric project outside of Bend. Systems must be located in Oregon.

The full list of potential recipients is below. ODOE staff expect to finalize performance agreements over the next few months; funds are made available to recipients after the project has been constructed and is operating, and once all conditions of the performance agreements are met.
